Phoenix Tour-Paramount Theater, Seattle, Washington: Review

For the first time in two years, the 2009 Grammy Award Winner for Best Alternative Album (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix), the band Phoenix is on tour and stopped by the Paramount Theater in Seattle for its second show. And my god. It was absolutely glorious.
March 29th, saw Phoenix come into town with special guest Mac DeMarco opening for them.  The night didn’t start off too well, with Mac DeMarco playing a generally weak set. They have a substantial amount of energy and they actually had some nice beats, but the lyrics and singing were so painful to hear, it rendered entire songs as useless. A lot of the songs started out with potential and got my feet moving, but eventually, especially at the chorus, the beat would change or the singing would become unbearable. I even fell asleep at some points. While I don’t want to disrespect Mac DeMarco, it was flat out, not my style and their live set needs work, especially so that people can actually understand what they say.

Let’s all just SET SAIL! – Their latest “Charleston”

Holy hell. Summer is on the brink. I know it is still May, but it’s so damn close. I can feel it creeping up on me. Yes there are some spouts of crappy weather but it’s Seattle, so whaddya expect? But nevertheless, I have only been listening to summer feel jams of late. Sorry to my somber favorites, but it’s town to shake the cobwebs off of those rusty “summer feelings” and get them back up.  And hot damn, have I come across a track that just jump starts my adrenaline. I just feel it with this song.

Set Sail, hailing from Sydney, comes up with an absolutely AWESOME track in “Charleston”. I always feel like songs that are under two minutes don’t really have a chance to make an impact, because it takes a while to get into something but damn! “Charleston” is only about 1 min 42 secs. And it is fucking awesome through the entire song. There is definitely no foreplay with this song, Set Sail doesn’t mess. They start out banging with the lyrics and drums and just pull you into a state of joy. This stuff is the shit! It’s really fun to listen to and giving it a listen a few times through will get you enough of the lyrics to just sing along to. There’s just this joyous energy that oozes out of this song. My favorite part has to come at around 24 seconds and then drops straight into that simple head bobbing melody. Also those “ooo oo ooo ooo ooo ooo” (have no clue how to spell it. listen and you’ll know) just get me every time. I really do dig this track and damn do I hate Set Sail for making it. I mean c’mon! It’s May right now and still some time left until summer is actually here. Nice of them to bring out the aches and yearns of the summery state of mind I wish to be in. Still an awesome track though.

LYRICS:

Let’s go out now
Down to san clemente
Hit the beach
We’re surfing California
Come on, baby
You and me can watch the sun set from the hillsSo twist and shout
Let’s do the Charleston
Shake your hips
Like it’s the 20s
Dance with me
You know you want to
Twist and shoutLet’s go down town
Down the Pasadena
Driving around town
In my El Camino
Starts at ice house
Meet you in the alley
Hey hey won’t you be my lady

So twist and shout
Let’s do the Charleston
Shake your hips
Like it’s the 20s
Dance with me
You know you want to
Twist and shout

C’mon twist and shout
Let’s do the Charleston
Shake your hips
Like it’s the 20s
Dance with me
You know you want to
Twist and shout
Come on, baby

So twist and shout
Let’s do the Charleston
Shake your hips
Like it’s the 20s
Dance with me
You know you want to
Twist and shout
