A$AP Rocky – ‘Goldie’

Most stoner rap puts me off. I don’t want to hear about how much you love the chronic. A$AP is different. Brooklyn’s hottest is brash and smooth, coming from a classic tradition of rap braggadocio. His flow is classic and his production (this track by Hit-Boy) glides. The bass is driving forward with a classic East Coast edge while the drum beat and background are laid back, easy and syncopated, decidedly West Coast. The production does nothing but enhance A$AP’s verses. This is the new underground, where East and West are no longer pitted against one another but are symbiotic, leading to superb results. If this first single is a sign of what’s to come, A$AP’s debut album promises to be a banger.
