If you know me you probably know that I am obsessed with hockey and the Vancouver Canucks in particular. As the 2011-2012 NHL regular season has come to a close, the boys from up north are two time defending Presidents’ Cup winners (regular season league champions). They boast a number of stars, highlighted by the elite scoring pair of Swedish twins – Henrik and Daniel Sedin – as well as the do-it-all center Ryan Kesler and French-Canadian agitator Alex Burrows. These stars are flanked by an impressive supporting cast and the backbone of the squad, the goaltending tandem of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider. With that said, the boys are coming off of a loss in Game 7 of last year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs to the hated Boston Bruins. The Canucks have drawn quite a bit of ire from the mainstream media and from fans of other teams alike since their ascent to the league’s pinnacle last year. They are harshly portrayed as a brash and whiny bunch of divas and divers. With this reputation in tow, a portion of the fanbase has subscribed to the #embracethehate campaign, a we don’t give a damn approach to the naysayers and haters who are jealous of the team we put on the ice night in and night out. This is where the music part comes: as the playoffs start, this Christmas-like occasion calls for a playlist!
Some classic sports anthems are included (“No Sleep Til’ Brooklyn”, former goal celebration song “Holiday”), we have the perfect #embracethehate anthem from Vancouver duo Japandroids, some hip-hop boasting from Rockie Fresh, Nacho, and Shabazz….These are bookended by “Our Trip”, the perfect track for the start of this journey, and “Double Vision Quest”, a song that captures the emotion of a long Stanley Cup run. Hopefully that is what the Canucks provide us with over the next two months.
