First, news abounds from the Sigur Ros camp confirming what I had predicted: a new album to be released this year. Valtari, the Icelandic dreamers’ first full length album since 2008, will be released in May. Apparently it is going to sound like an “avalanche in slow motion” according to the band’s lead singer, Jonsi. Bring it on. The band released a single to whet our appetites – http://obscuresound.com/2012/03/stream-sigur-ros-ekki-mukk/
As if that wasn’t enough. Hours later, Japandroids’ facebook released this: a new tour schedule, a confirmed date for their second full length album, Celebration Rock, and streaming of the first single from that album on their Soundcloud. The single, “The House that Heaven Built”, is an exuberant burner that has me pumped to hear the rest of their new material. It can be found here – http://japandroids.com/ The chorus, featuring a nonchalant but biting “ahhh go to hell”, is filled with a playful vitriol. The sing along “oh”‘s combined with the pounding drums and cleanly recorded but fuzzy guitar riffs tell me that Celebration Rock will be a less ragged version of 2009’s classic Post Nothing. That album is my favorite of all time. Can you tell that I’m smiling as I type this? This summer is going to be awesome.
