The Weeknd: I Missed Out on the Hype in 2011, Allow Me to Sing Praise for 2012

The Weeknd came came out of nowhere today. Nobody right now is making music like this kid not even the same tone. Stunning. Abel Tesfaye (born February 16, 1990), better known by his stage name The Weeknd (pronounced weakened), is a Canadian recording artist and of Ethiopian descent. Songs recorded under The Weeknd name first leaked in late 2010, though the identity of the individual behind the project was initially unknown. The Weeknd released a nine-song free album, House of Balloons, on 21 March 2011. This album is a part of a trilogy which includes Thursday, released on 18 August 2011. On December 21, 2011  Tesfaye released his highly anticipated third album Echoes of Silence. The Weeknd’s site crashed shortly after due to the large number of downloads. The Weeknd quickly provided a Hulkshare link to keep the album available while the official site was down. The amazing thing about The Weeknd is that all of his work is from digital download aka RELEASED FOR FREE BY THE ARTIST HIMSELF!

It just went up on their site earlier with no explanation, which seems to be appropriate, considering the mysteriousness of it all. There’s this feeling of – these weird, morning-after tales of lust, hurt, and over-indulgence … are matched by this incredibly lush, downcast music. Packed full of sex, drugs and some downright killer production, this easily stands as one of the year’s best debuts.

A cover of Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana”.

As you may have noticed, the tone and music takes an even more somber outlook as you progress through the mixtapes (notice the dates in which they are released, that may explain the transitions).
