Florence + the Machine — “What The Water Gave Me”

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect the sophomore effort of crossover sensations Florence + the Machine to wow me. Lungs was a great effort. But I assumed it would be a flash in the pan.

I was wrong.

They got better. The lyricism has stayed poignant, but the melodies have taken on a more polished and restrained quality, helped by slicker production as well as a welcome evolution in style. It’s comparable to Adele’s second album, but Florence Welch uses something different to create her sound–vocal restraint and smart harmonic blending. The new single “What The Water Gave Me” is superbly arranged and executed by The Machine, and Florence shows just how good she can really be, when she cools off for a moment and lets the water, represented by the soothing, deep, bass, take over.

Needless to say, I can’t wait to hear more.
